In "The Last Spell of Fistandantilus," what appears to be a pillar behind Fistandantilus is actually a huge rope.  As a child, Parkinson was fascinated by the movie, Sinbad.  The emperor kept his soul at the top of a tower, accessible only by a huge rope.  Parkinson thought the image appropriate in portraying the laboratory of the evil mage.
